Butyrates

It is a well-know fact that butyric acid has a positive effect on the intestinal wall of the colon with humans. Butyric acid is produced by fermentation in the colon and plays an important role in fighting diseases such as colon cancer and Crohn Disease. It has also been established that butyric acid has a positive influence on intestine health with animals. Not only the colon, but also the small intestine respond positively to the presence of butyric acid.

Butyric acid is the energy source for the gut wall cells. This means that it has a direct impact on the development, regeneration, growth and multiplication of the villi in the intestinal tract.
An interesting result is the increased length and number of the intestinal villi. This enhances the enzymatic digestion and enlarges the absorption surface. Butyric acid also positively influences the balance between pathogenic and good bacteria in the colon, preventing the adhesion and colonization of pathogenic bacteria in the colon.
Besides the positive effects of butyric acid in the colon, it also strengthens the functioning of the pancreas and liver. The pancreas has a higher production rate of insulin and digestion enzymes, whereas the liver produces more long chain fatty acids.

Butyric acid has a unpleasant smell for humans. Salts of butytic acid smell have a less pungent smell, depending on the strength of the bound and the easiness to dissociate. By using calcium butyrate, the smell is decreased and butyrate is more gradually released in the small intestine than other salts of butyrate.
The encapsulated form (fat) makes the product free of the butyric smell. Lipases in the small intestine will break down this fat coating and the butyrate becomes available in this part of the intestine.

Calcium butyrate is available under the name Globamax Performant. Globamax Performant is the most concentrated coated form of butyrate with 84% calciumbutyrate. The product Globamax Advanced is a double-coated calcium butyrate with 72% calcium butyrate.
