Tannins |
Tannins are substances (polyphenols) found in certain plants and trees. In plants, tannins are defensive compounds that protect the plant against bacteria and fungi, parasites and insects. Tannins can be divided into:
- Condensed Tannins: tannins with a very strong adstringent function, which bind strongly on proteins. That is why these tannins are considered anti-nutritional factors.
- Hydrolysable Tannins: tannins which bind proteins in a reversible way and therefore, contribute to a good digestion and intestinal health.
Gloabtan is a natural extract from the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea Sativa Mill). It consists of a high concentration of hydrolysable tannins extracted from the twigs of this tree. The hydrolysable tannins bind iron in intestinal content, thereby inhibiting E. coli. Tannins also bind directly on the fimbrae of the E. coli bacteria, preventing attachment of the bacteria to the intestinal wall. Clostridium perfringens is inhibited by Globatan by coagulating harmful enzymes. In addition, Globatan has a protective effect on the mucus layer in the intestine by binding proteins. Globatan is a feed additive that supports animal health and the effective use of nutrients. It is available in powder & granulates, and can be used in piglets, fattening pigs and rabbits.
